A special day to remember

Every year on August 1st, the World Scout Centre comes alive with two incredible celebrations: World Scarf Day and Swiss National Day. It’s a day that perfectly captures the essence of what Scouting is all about—unity, tradition, and global friendship. This year, we welcomed over 1800 Scouts and Guides from 40 different countries and territories, making it a truly international experience.

The Importance of Scouting

The significance of the day was beautifully expressed by our Centre Director, Pani, who shared why Scouting matters so much in today’s world:

"Look around yourselves. What do you see? Where some people might see different colours of uniforms, we see the same values and principles. Where some people see different cultures, backgrounds, and religions, we choose to see diversity and inclusion. Where some people see Scouts and Guides having fun, we see the leaders of tomorrow acquiring the skills and knowledge to bring us to the future. When some people see Scouts hanging around a campfire, we see the creation of a better world. That optimistic idea, that we can come together from every corner of the globe to create a better world, is what unites us. And that is what we celebrate here today."

These words set the tone for an incredible day filled with shared experiences, cultural exchange, and a sense of belonging that stretched beyond borders.

A Day Full of Fun, Learning, and Unity

The festivities began with an amazing breakfast, made even more fun with a breakfast show, morning aerobics, and a live radio show to get everyone energized for the day ahead. Following breakfast, we dove into our Global Goals Exhibition, where Scouts and Guides had the chance to explore important topics with the help of our partners, including the United Nations Human Rights, Sol Africa, Swiss UN Youth Rep, and Our Chalet (the Guides World Centre in Adelboden). These activities helped highlight the bigger mission of Scouting: making the world a better place by promoting sustainability, equality, and peace. In the afternoon, the campsite turned into a vibrant hub of cultures during the World Carnival. Each country showed off its unique traditions—whether through food, games, music, or dance. It was a beautiful blend of flavours and sounds, where Scouts got to share pieces of their home with everyone else, celebrating the diversity that unites us in Scouting. Before we gathered for a big BBQ, the legendary story of Swiss folk hero William Tell was brought to life by our very own Pinkies in a live performance. It was the perfect way to connect with the history of Switzerland, just like William Tell united the Swiss people in the early 1300s.

As the sun began to set, we gathered for a special ceremony. Representatives from every country present were introduced, followed by a heartfelt speech from Pani. It was a powerful moment where we all stood together, united as Scouts and Guides from around the world, bonded by our shared values. To close the day, we marched through the village of Kandersteg in a colourful parade, waving flags and singing traditional Scout songs along with chants from our different countries. The parade ended in the village centre, where we joined the local community to celebrate Swiss National Day with fireworks lighting up the night sky, live music and speeches from the mayor and Swiss government representatives. It was a magical conclusion to a day that reminded us all of the power of Scouting to bridge cultures, promote understanding, and create lasting friendships.

Looking Ahead

August 1st is always a special day at KISC, but this year felt especially meaningful. With more than 1800 Scouts and Guides coming together, it was a true testament to the global strength of our movement. As we look ahead, we carry the spirit of this day with us—united by the values of Scouting, committed to creating a better world. Here’s to another year of celebrating unity, diversity, and the unforgettable experiences we create together at KISC!
